Fine examples of period salting stones. Once upon a time when you'd slaughtered your pig (as you do!) and prepare the various cuts of meat. You'd then pop them on the salting stone, sprinkle and roll them in salt - working the salt into the meat as you go.
The small channel around the edge is surprisingly good at stopping salt cascading onto the floor and makes it easier to wash down the slabs afterwards. As salting slabs fell out of use they were often abandoned in farmyards and barns across the land and many, particularly larger ones, suffered damage or broke. Both stones are intact, there is some wear and delamination which is common in older stone of this type.
These make wonderful rustic table tops both indoor and outdoor.
The smaller stone (on top in the photo) is 159cm x 95,5cm x 4cm
The larger stone (on the bottom) is 190cm x 96.6cm x 4cm
Please note: these stones are very heavy!
