ITEM CODE: W0519B028

What a thing, what a joy to behold! This wonderful old 1930s three-wheel ice cream vendor’s tricycle is bursting with nostalgia and character. Part of Hereford’s rich history, it was once a common sight on the city streets and at county fairs. Originally used to sell ice cream it would have had a lead-lined wooden box filled with ice on the front. This particular three-wheeler was later fitted with a street organ when ‘Windelli’s merry melodies’ entertained the public in the street, at venues and local events. Made from strong tubular steel with a leather Lycett saddle - it has fixed gearing and all-original lever and rod brakes (though the operating mechanism for the rear brake appears to be missing). The pedal cycle is fully articulated, pivoting around the handle-bar stem and has a substantial load platform. The rear basket / box mounting plates are a practical feature. The build quality of this fine old street vendors trike is testament to the hey-day of British manufacturing. The strength and scale of the spoke wheels, frame and brakes are more akin to an early motorcycle than a bicycle. The current front mudguards are replacements. The tyres are recent and in good condition though sadly the rear currently has a slow puncture! A great piece of social history that can be used, displayed or fully restored. Please note the baskets are not included - but these and other baskets are for available for sale.
