The real McCoy! A pair of authentic vintage greengrocers shop awning brackets with remnants of lovely green paint, robust mounting plates a classic retracting scissor-action mechanism.
Retractable awnings have been popular since the 1860's, providing protection from the sun and rain to both produce and customers on the pavement. The cost of manufacturing, installing and maintaining such awnings meant they were normally associated with quality retailers.
These brackets would have been mounted either end of a canvas awning that rolled up into a 'blind-box' on the wall between them. Made entirely from iron, this substantial matched pair of supports are quite stiff having likely been unused for years - surely a little oil soaked into the mechanism will free them up once more?
These could possibly be re-instated in a retail setting or perhaps repurposed to support an awning on a garden, house or summerhouse wall.
