A magical piece full of character, heritage and innovation, all combined and re-imagined in this unique bohemian style coffee table.
Slingsby's was founded in 1893 in Victorian London and within a year had patented their sliding-wheel truck. A clever design enabling fixed wheel trolleys to be manoeuvred with greater ease and it's this innovative invention we find on this very cart (see photos).
This cart also employs another Slingsby innovation; sprung-pinion suspension. The whole bed of the cart floats on four independent springs, adding mechanical feature and intrigue to this fine period piece.
Pomagne was first marketed by Bulmers of Herefordshire in 1906 as a 'champagne cider'. It was an effervescent drink that didn't like being 'shook up', so special trolleys like this one were used to move it. The sprung suspension absorbed the rumblings of brick and cobbled loading areas and wooden loading ramps etc. evident by the chips to the wheel rims.
This very special cart has its original dovetail jointed chassis, iron bolt mounts and axles with cast iron wheels bearing the makers name. The sprung pinion suspension is intact which supports the substantial solid English Oak top. The top may not be original to the trolley but is fashioned in the same rustic style from aged oak planks.
A beautiful adaptation of a fine and rare Victorian London market trolley that will become the stand-out feature of any home or retail interior.
