Early Twentieth century sewing machine bases are always so deliciously decorative being designed to appeal to 'the lady of the house'. This curvaceous carriage is by Jones of Manchester whose machines were used by Princess Alexandra and who were renown for their ornamental design.
This working treadle is operated by rocking the footplate with your foot/feet. This cranks the flywheel which in turn would have driven the sewing machine by way of a rubber belt. Jones Sewing machines are still widely collected. The base is painted in old English (or China) white with its four original lateral casters allowing easy movement.
