These imposing antique cider presses are remarkable survivors of traditional orchard industry. Known as "cheese" presses due to the way layers of apple pomace (wrapped in straw or cloth) resembled blocks of cheese when stacked for pressing, these machines represent the second stage of the cider-making process.
The collection includes two distinct designs: one featuring a robust, double-threaded twin screw mechanism and another utilizing a substantial single central screw. Both are constructed from massive, weathered oak timbers held together by heavy-duty hand-forged iron bolts and strapping. The wooden components show a fantastic aged character, with a silvered patina and deep grain earned through decades of outdoor exposure. These monumental pieces are not only important industrial artefacts but also serve as spectacular architectural features for a landscape project, courtyard, or large garden, providing a powerful sense of history and scale.
