These substantial antique cider mill bases (also known as "chase" stones) are quintessential examples of traditional West Country agricultural history. Each mill base has been meticulously hand-carved from a single, massive block of natural stone—likely gritstone or limestone—featuring a deep, circular trough where apples were once crushed by a heavy rolling stone.

The collection includes several variations of mill bases consisting of several sections joined together. The stones display a magnificent weathered character, with some showing heavy encrustation of lichen and moss, while others reveal the distinct, rugged tool marks from their original creation. Due to their immense scale and weight, these mills make unparalleled architectural statements in a garden or courtyard. They are frequently repurposed as dramatic low-level planters, unique water features, or as the centrepiece for a traditional herb garden.
