This antique set of Victorian Richter’s 'Anchor Box' (Anker-Steinbaukasten) building stones is a remarkable survival of nineteenth-century educational design. Housed in its original wooden crate, the set contains a substantial quantity of smooth, precision-cut mineral blocks in traditional terracotta, cream, and slate-grey tones. These tactile stones were designed to mimic the weight and feel of real masonry, allowing for the construction of miniature architectural marvels with impressive stability.
The wooden box features a highly decorative, lithographed paper label on the lid, showcasing intricate classical motifs and the prestigious medals won by the manufacturer, F. Ad. Richter & Co. While the label remains clear and vibrant in places, the box itself shows significant signs of its long life and service. The timber casing is damaged, with notable losses to the wood at the corners and edges, and the paper lithography is worn and lifting in areas, revealing the honest age and storied past of the set.
Inside, the blocks are accompanied by the original illustrated design sheets, which have also mellowed with time. There is a wonderful sense of history to this set, from the slight rounding of the stone edges to the seasoned, weathered character of the damaged casing. It is not merely a toy but a sophisticated piece of social history, representing the Victorian emphasis on structured, constructive play and architectural appreciation.
