This is a rare opportunity to own a tangible piece of Herefordshire’s social and postal history. These antique wax seals were once the official tools of village sub-postmasters, used to secure mail bags and official documents with the authority of the General Post Office. Each seal features a beautifully turned treen (natural wood) handle, polished by decades of daily use to a deep, ergonomic patina.
The solid brass die at the base of each seal is crisply engraved with the name of a specific Hereford village and the official GPO crown. We currently have a selection of local locations available, including:
Staunton on Wye
Canon Pyon
Callow
Stretton Sugwas
Wormelow
Whitchurch
Whitestone
Swainshill
Ewyas Harold
Please note: These are sold individually. Please select your preferred village from the options below.
Whether you are a collector of postal heritage or a resident of one of these historic villages, these seals make for a fascinating desktop accessory or a unique gift. They represent a bygone era of the British postal system and remain as functional today as they were over a century ago.
