This antique set of Victorian Richter’s Anchor Stone Blocks (Anker-Steinbaukasten) is a truly evocative piece of social history. These sets were the world’s first systematic construction toys, made from a secret mixture of quartz sand, chalk, and linseed oil to mimic the feel and weight of real masonry.
What makes this particular set extraordinary is the poignant, handwritten pencil inscription on the front of the wooden box: "For Norman Xmas 1894." This simple note transforms a classic toy into a personal heirloom, offering a direct connection to a Victorian Christmas over 130 years ago. The box itself, made of sturdy timber, has a wonderful aged patina and retains its original colourful lithographed label, which remains remarkably vibrant.
Inside, the blocks are cold to the touch and heavy, just as they were designed to be, allowing for the construction of miniature architectural marvels. They show the honest wear of a toy that was likely Norman’s most prized possession, with softened edges that tell of a century of building and rebuilding.
This is a rare find for collectors of vintage toys or Victorian ephemera. It is a hardy, tactile piece of history that would look magnificent on a library shelf or in a period-inspired nursery, serving as a beautiful reminder of a childhood long past.
