These original German S.F.14.Z.Gi (Scherenfernrohr) periscope binoculars belived to be made by Optische Werke G. Rodenstock in Munich (Marked eso) also often affectionately known as 'Rabbit Ears' due to their iconic silhouette.
Designed for observation from the safety of a trench or behind armored plating, these optics were a staple of the German artillery and panzer units throughout the Western Front. The twin telescopic arms could be splayed wide for enhanced stereoscopic depth perception or kept vertical to peer over parapets without exposing the observer to enemy fire.
This particular set carries the authentic patina of its age, featuring a mix of original field-grey finish and historical wear that tells a story of genuine service.
The 'eso' Stamp: Identifies the maker as Rodenstock, Munich.
Low Serial Number: Stamped 6288, suggesting an earlier or more limited production run.
The Climate Mark: Features the "o" (circle and bar) vacuum grease symbol, indicating these were prepared for use in the temperate climates of the Western Front or Central Europe.
Artillery Spec: The 'Gi' suffix confirms these are fitted with a Gitterplatte (grid reticle) for precision range-finding and directing fire.
