This rare antique Victorian tinsel print is a captivating example of nineteenth-century folk art, depicting "Edward the Black Prince" in full ceremonial regalia. The print features a hand-coloured lithograph of the Prince mounted on a dapple-grey charger, which has been intricately embellished with hand-applied metallic foils (tinsel). These shimmering accents are used to dramatic effect on the Prince’s crown, armour, and the heraldic lions on the horse’s caparison, creating a unique three-dimensional shimmer.
The artwork is signed "W. West Fec" and remains housed in its original beaded gilt slip and a simple black ebonised frame. This style of "theatrical" print was a popular hobby in the early to mid-Victorian era, where enthusiasts would purchase plain prints of famous figures and painstakingly decorate them with tinsel at home. To find one in such excellent condition, with the metallic foils retaining their lustre and the colours remaining vibrant, is quite uncommon.
This piece is a fantastic addition for a collector of Victorian ephemera or theatrical memorabilia. Its historical subject matter and charming, handcrafted quality make it a standout decorative item, perfect for adding a touch of nineteenth-century character to a gallery wall or a traditional study.
